HUMOR is the Leadership Word of the Day!

Today’s leadership word of the day is “humor.”

Hu·mor [hyoo-mer or, often, yoo-] noun

  1. A comic, absurd, or incongruous quality causing amusement: the humor of a situation.
  2. The faculty of perceiving what is amusing or comical: He is completely without humor.
  3. An instance of being or attempting to be comical or amusing; something humorous: The humor in his joke eluded the audience.
  4. The faculty of expressing the amusing or comical: The author’s humor came across better in the book than in the movie.
  5. Comical writing or talk in general; comical books, skits, plays, etc.

I love to laugh. Of all the things that are available to us, I believe that humor is what connects us the most.

Remember to laugh at yourself, because someone else already is…

In this video by my mentor John C. Maxwell, John talks about self deprecating humor, in other words laughing at yourself is the most powerful. Why?

Our destinies in life will never be determined by our complaining spirits or high expectations.  Life is full of surprises, and the adjustment of our attitudes is a lifelong project.

The pessimist complains about the wind.

The optimist expects it to change.

The leader adjusts the sales.

We choose what attitudes we have right now.  And it’s a continuing choice.  I’m amazed at the large number of adults who fail to take responsibility for their attitudes.  If they are grumpy and someone asks why, they will say, “I got up on the wrong side of the bed.” When failure begins to plague their lives, they will say, “I was born on the wrong side of the tracks.” When life begins to flatten out and others in the family are still climbing, they will say, “Well, I was in the wrong birth order in my family.” When their marriages fail, they believe they married the wrong person.  When someone else gets a promotion they wanted, it is because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Do you notice something?  They are blaming everyone else for their problems.

The greatest date in your life and mine is when we take total responsibility for our attitudes.  That’s the day we truly grow up.

FAMILY is the Leadership Word of the Day!

My Family

Today’s leadership word of the day is “family.”

FAM·i·ly [fam-uh-lee, fam-lee] noun

  1. A basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not: the traditional family.
  2. A social unit consisting of one or more adults together with the children they care for: a single-parent family.
  3. The children of one person or one couple collectively: We want a large family.
  4. The spouse and children of one person: We’re taking the family on vacation next week.
  5. Any group of persons closely related by blood, as parents, children, uncles, aunts, and cousins: to marry into a socially prominent family.
  6. All those persons considered as descendants of a common progenitor.

In my humble opinion I believe there is nothing more important than family.

Over the years I have had different definitions of success, but a few years ago my mentor John C. Maxwell offered me a definition that hit home and I have adopted.

“Success means having those closest to me love and respect me the most.” Family should be those that are closest to you.

In this video by my mentor John C. Maxwell he shares his thoughts about family along with his father.

The world has never seen a great leader who lacked commitment.  If you want to be an effective leader, you have to be committed.  True commitment inspires and attracts people.  It shows them that you have conviction.  They will believe in you only if you believe in your cause.  People buy into the leader, then the vision.  What is the true nature of commitment?  Take a look at three observations.

  1. Commitments Starts in the Heart: I am told that in the Kentucky Derby, the winning horse effectively runs out of oxygen after the first half mile, and goes the rest of the way on heart.  If you want to make a difference in other people’s lives as a leader, look into your heart to see if you’re really committed.
  2. Commitment is Tested by Action: It’s one thing to talk about commitment.  It’s another to do something about it.  The only real measure of commitment is action.  Arthur Gordon acknowledged, “Nothing is easier than saying words.  Nothing is harder then living them day after day.”
  3. Commitment Opens the Door to Achievement: As a leader, you will face plenty of obstacles and opposition – if you don’t already.  And there will be times when commitment is the only thing that carries you forward.  David McNally commented, “Commitment is the enemy of resistance, for it is the serious promise to press on, to get up, no matter how many times you were knocked down.”

How You Should Build Your MLM Business Now That Old Techniques No Longer Work

Did you know that the old fashioned offline marketing methods of pounding the phones, holding meetings (one-on-on, hotel), pitching your business to leads, and trying to turn your friends and family members into business partners have come to an end?

It’s true.

When I started my MLM career back in 1985, I was taught to prospect anyone that was outside a 3 foot radius of my body.

Well guess what? “Prospecting” for business as we’ve known it, has changed and become totally obsolete. It’s an irrelevant, old-school sales technology that is only pursued by individuals who have yet to discover the methods Magnetic Sponsoring is based upon.

Business and life have changed since 1985, as a matter of fact; business and life have changed since 2009 when I moved my MLM business online to leverage the power of the internet.

The internet has created an entirely new world of opportunity for everyone, where you can literally re-invent your life, and turn a simple thought into a business for little or no money at all.

Hopefully, that’s a trend you intend to take advantage of, or you wouldn’t be here right now.

Perhaps we should start with a reality check.

Did you know that 97% of the people that start home-managed businesses fail within the first two years?

The reason is quite simple and something that I suffered from for years, lack of relevant knowledge and skills.

What do I mean by that? I came from a corporate background and had developed a strong set of skills that I naturally thought would position me for success in the MLM profession.

The reality for me was that the skills I learnt on the corporate side did not translate well at all to help build my MLM business. As a matter of fact, I think the only characteristic I was able to move over to MLM was my name and my smile.

Thank God that I also started a personal development journey in 1985 as well, or my career in MLM would have been short lived.

So jump ahead to 2009, I was introduced to a gentleman by the name of Mike Dillard who truly opened my mind as to how to effectively build my business in this new era.

Mike Dillard eventually became a business partner of mine and he taught me how to sell something to someone. He said quite simply, “Kevin, you’ve got to find a way to get invited into your prospects world and stop being a pest.”

Mike went on to say that there are only two options when it comes to building your business:

  1. Don’t change anything from my old techniques, keep throwing leads at the wall and hoping something sticks and perhaps I can beat the odds of the 97% failure rate. Or…
  2. Personally brand yourself online, so that you are positioned in the market place in a manner that allows interested prospects to find you, and contact you.

It did not take a rocket scientist (unless you are one) to realize that the second option was the best long term approach.

During Mike’s teachings he stressed one dynamic that is key to the concept of Magnetic Sponsoring:

“Who finds and contacts the other person first is very important. In Option 1, you were chasing the prospect. In Option 2, the prospect was chasing you, which means you are perceived as the expert, and hold all of the power and value in that situation.”

I had never really stopped to think about it before. That’s exactly what I had been doing for 24 years, chasing people.

Then Mike said something profound:

“The prospect invited you into his world, and is basically asking you to sell him your goods or services. You get to instantly bypass all of the barriers and walls that must be broken down by everyone else, and all of a sudden this isn’t about selling any more.”

It was at this point that I knew if I followed his advice, I would be positioned as the knowledgeable expert whose expertise will be sought out and pursued.

How difficult is it to position yourself as a knowledgeable expert?

It is really quite simple. The number one unique marketing weapon that you possess is YOU!

What I learned and what you will learn in Magnetic Sponsoring is how to use attraction marketing strategies to become that person… That leader and that expert that everyone wants to work with… The type of person whose phone calls and emails are welcomed and valued instead of detested and deleted.

Without question, you can be that person.

Here is a small sample of what you will learn in Magnetic Sponsoring:

  • Two of the most powerful triggers in existence are value and status.
  • People are genetically programmed to feel attraction towards others who have equal or higher levels of value and status and you’re no different.
  • We respond this way because we stand to gain power through an association with that person.
  • If you can establish a relationship with a person of greater status and value, your value and status automatically increase as well through that association alone.

Why is this important to me?

  1. New doors and opportunities are opened.
  2. New, inside knowledge can be gained that’s only reserved for people within that circle.
  3. New alliances and partnerships with other powerful people can be formed.

So, if you’re not sponsoring new distributors, if prospects don’t return your phone calls, or respond to your emails, it’s because you don’t hold any value in their eyes. You have nothing to offer them.

And that’s ok. Everyone start’s from square one, but if you want to achieve the highest levels of success in this profession, you need to change that.

The best way to increase your value to others, especially in the MLM profession, is to increase your knowledge level.

That is exactly what Mike did and what is taught in Magnetic Sponsoring.

Mike told me the following, “I spent a good year buying every course I could on online marketing, copywriting, and personal development, and by the end of that year, and I had so much to offer my prospects, that sponsoring literally became effortless.”

Remember that if you want to make the sponsoring process as easy as possible, you need to increase your value to your prospects by increasing your level of knowledge and experience.

Over the years I have had the pleasure of meeting a significant number of leaders in the MLM profession.

When we get a chance to talk, be it at an event, airport, limo, or just over the phone, the topic of fear is usually near the top.

Why? Well, I usually ask them the following, “If you had to choose one thing that you did that contributed the most to your success?”

The answer I hear 90 percent of the time is, overcoming fear. Fear of communicating, fear of success etc.

Just before I headed out with my family in late January for a much needed vacation, I was able to listen to an interview between Bob Burg (The Go-Giver) interviewing Lisa Jimenez, international speaker, success coach and best-selling author of Conquer Fear!

It is a short (20 minute) yet powerful audio that will help anyone that finds that they need to overcome their fears.

I hope that you enjoyed that interview as much as I did. Feel free to share it with friends and remember to implement those insights that Lisa offered us.

By the way, her book is quite powerful as well…

Psychologist Henry H. Goddard conducted a study on energy levels in children using an instrument he called the “ergograph.” His findings are fascinating.  He discovered that when tired children were given a word of praise or commendation, the ergograph showed an immediate upward surge of energy in the children.  When the children were criticized or discouraged, the ergograph showed that their physical energy took a sudden nosedive.

You may have already discovered this intuitively.  When someone praises you, doesn’t your energy level go up?  And when you are criticized, doesn’t that comment drag you down?  Words have great power.

What kind of environment do you think you could create if you continually affirmed people when you first came into contact with them?  Not only would you encourage them, but you would also become an energy carrier.  Whenever you walked into a room, the people would light up!  You would help to create the kind of environment everyone loves.  Just your presence alone would brighten people’s days.

BEGINNING is the Leadership Word of the Day!

Today’s leadership word of the day is “beginning.”

Be·gin·ning [bih-gin-ing] noun

  1. An act or circumstance of entering upon an action or state: the beginning of hostilities.
  2. The point of time or space at which anything begins: the beginning of the Christian era; the beginning of the route.
  3. The first part: the beginning of the book; the beginning of the month.
  4. Often, beginnings. The initial stage or part of anything: the beginnings of science.
  5. Origin; source; first cause: A misunderstanding about the rent was the beginning of their quarrel.

We all love beginning a trip, right? It is exciting and we look forward to what lies ahead.

So why not start every day like it is a new beginning to a journey, a daily journey.

In this video by my mentor John C. Maxwell, John talks to us about a new beginning and how we should start every new day.

The interaction between every leader and follower is a relationship, and all relationships either add to or subtract from a person’s life.  The bottom line in leadership is not how far we advance ourselves but how far we advance others.  That is achieved by serving others and adding value to their lives.  The law of addition asks one simple question: are you making things better for the people who follow you?  That’s it.  We add value to others when we:

  • Truly value others
  • Make ourselves more valuable to others
  • Know and relate to what others value
  • Do things that God values

Adding value to others through service does not just benefit the people being served.  It allows the leaders to experience:

  • Fulfillment in leading others
  • Leadership with the right motives
  • The ability to perform significant acts as leaders
  • The development of the leadership team
  • An attitude of servers on team.
